From the desk of Ms. Karen Sobiecki, Recorder/Secretary

            MINUTES OF PARISIONERS MEETING
OCTOBER 14, 2009

PRESENT: Father Tom, Carolyn Barta, Jerry & Melba Burroughs, Tom Card, Sue Carol Oathout, Tom & Lou Pannunzio, Martha Seep, Gerri Silva, Karen & Mike Sobiecki, Chuck Strahoda, and Joan & Norm Wallace.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION REPORT – Sue Carol Oathout. Sue Carol presented us with an updated report on what the children have been doing and the projects they have been involved in. I have attached a copy of her minutes to this document.

ST. JUDE FEAST DAY – Bishop Holley will be here on Sunday to concelebrate with Father Tom for the Feast Day Mass, World Priest Day and a Mass of Thanksgiving for our Share The Vision – Growing in Faith Campaign. Sue Carol has laid out an outline for Mass on Sunday. There will be a covered dish dinner in the hall after Mass. The Social Committee with provide the meat and a cake. Jerry will order the chicken and Karen will order the cake.

SOCIAL COMMITTEE – Karen Sobiecki reported a balance of $1,190.49. The supplies are in pretty good shape at this time, although shopping will be done for the Novena week. Karen stated the following events are planned and open to all parishioners of both parishes:

Church Christmas Party – December 13, 2009 – 5 to 8:30 p.m. & we
Need to do sign up sheets on the two weeks prior to the party.
Karen will provide sheets and will get help with the signups.
These sheets will show how many people are attending and what
they are bringing.
Mardi Gras Party is scheduled for Saturday, January 23, 2010.

Jerry Burroughs stated that volunteers are needed for donut Sundays and passed around a sign up sheet.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS – Mike Sobiecki announced the following events are planned:

30 Year Celebration – October 17, 2009 after 4:00 Mass
Seniors Thanksgiving Lunch – Tuesday, November 24, 2009
Knights Christmas Party – Thursday, December 10, 2009 at 6:30
Pig Raffle Drawing – Thursday, December 10, 2009 at Christmas Party
(Tickets are on sale now for $5.00 a ticket)

RENOVATION REPORT – Jerry Burroughs & Chuck Strahoda told us that each room will have a storage closet and will thereby eliminate all the clutter in the rooms. A new air conditioning unit is being installed on the classroom side of the hall. Wiring and sheet rock should begin this week.

FINANCIAL REPORT – Tom Pannunzio reported the Expenses for September were $7,722.34 – Income for September was $9,215.17 – Net Income $1,492.83. CSA Goal is $12,461.00 and we have received $10,634.00. There is a balance owed in the amount of $1,827. If this amount is not paid by the people who have pledged it, the balance will have to be paid by the Church. Share the Vision has given us $1,486.75 back from the pledges that have been paid to date and this money is earmarked for Religious Education.

A discussion as to how the renovation loan would be paid back. It was decided that a meeting needed to be held with the diocese to see if payments to the renovation fund would have to be shown as income to the church and be taxed by the diocese. Since this meeting Tom Pannunzio has been in touch with the diocese and has determined that “Only funds earmarked for facility repair will be deposited in the account. Therefore it would be correct for us to deposit contributions, earmarked for one of our listed construction projects, directly into our liability account without showing them as income in our general operating account and therefore would not be liable to assessment.” We are looking into the preparation of envelopes for payment to this liability account instead of using the “Emergency Fund” envelopes, as we no longer can use that account.

LADIES ALTAR SOCIETY – Gerri Silva and Martha Seep announced that a display would be put in the hall with regard to the DCCW and they also announced that we are in the middle of the 40 Days for Life Campaign and hoped everyone would keep this project in their prayers.

Respectfully submitted,
Karen Sobiecki

MINUTES OF THE SEPTEMBER 9, 2009

ST. JUDE PARISHIONERS’ MEETING

PRESENT: Tom Card, Elizabeth Haber, Jerry Burroughs, Mike & Karen Sobiecki, & Tom Pannunzio.

Elizabeth Haber led us in prayer.

Financial Report: Tom Pannunzio reported that our income was $7,739.33 and our expenses were $5,753.66 for the month of August. We had a net income of $1,985.57. He also reported that our CSA goal is $12,461.00. We have received $9,834.00, leaving a balance owed in the amount of $2,627. We have until February to complete this goal.

Tom advised that he was working on the budget and things were progressing well with that. As we have not had a real budget in the past, this is a most time consuming project.

Social Committee: Karen Sobiecki reported that the Social Committee account is fine for now and that no further money is needed at this time.

Knights of Columbus: Mike Sobiecki reported that the next Knights Meeting was September 10, 2009. The first pancake breakfast will be September 20, 2009.

St. Jude Cemetary: Elizabeth Haber noted that Jody needs help with the upkeep of the Church Cemetary. She is going to talk with him to find out exactly what type of help he is in need of. Karen Sobiecki suggested the youth group may want to take a day to go there and do trim work and weeding as a service project. Elizabeth said there are still plots available and they are $200.00 with a $30.00 a year maintenance fee.

Church Religious Store: Elizabeth Haber noted that she would like someone to take over the store responsibilities. If anyone is interested in doing this, please contact Elizabeth Haber.

Church Projects: Jerry Burroughs stated that they are still waiting on bids for the handicap bathrooms. The bids are coming in at a much higher price that we had originally anticipated.

Parishioners Meeting: It was decided that our next meeting would be on the October 14th so we can finalize any plans for the Novena. After that we will be meeting on the third Wednesday of the month and we will only meet, every other month. By meeting later in the month, this will allow Tom Pannunzio to have a more current financial report for us. Our meeting schedule will be October 14, 2009, December 16, 2009, February 17, 2010, April 14, 2010. We will probably not have meetings in May, June or July and will start up again in August.

October 25, 2009: Bishop Holley will be here to celebrate the Mass with us and in that celebration, we will be having the children’s mass/family celebration, a mass of thanksgiving for the Share the Vision, Growing in Faith Campaign, Priests Day and the St. Jude Feast Day. I believe the Church is going to purchase the meat for the covered dish dinner after Mass.

Church Christmas Party: This will be held on December 13, 2009 at the Nature Trail. Time to be announced.

Lector Workshop: Scheduled for September 12, 2009 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.

Eucharistic Minister Workshop: Scheduled for September 26, 2009 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.

The meeting was adjourned and we ended with a prayer.

Respectfully submitted,

Karen Sobiecki, Secretary

MINUTES OF THE AUGUST 11, 2009
ST. Mike is the leader for the children who lector and will be helping with the Confirmation Class of 2010.

Kathy Peacock – Kathy is the Special Projects Co-Ordinator and also assists Sue Carol when she is ill and cannot be present.

Debra Kashawlic – Debra is a new teacher and will be teaching the new class of 3, 4 and 5 year olds.

Stephanie Jogan – Stephanie is a new teacher and will be teaching 2nd & 3rd Graders.

Kim Peacock – Kim will be teaching 8th & 9th graders and will be preparing them for Confirmation in October of 2010.

Special thanks was given to all those who have supported the Religious Education Program, both groups and individuals.

The Religious Education children will again have their youth mass at the 10:30 a.m. mass on the 4th Sunday of the month.

More detailed minutes are on file and are available upon request. A calendar of events is also on file.

Parish Youth Group (PYG) - Grace Buenavista reported on last year’s activities and also the project calendar through December of this year. PYG will again being having their youth mass on the 3rd Saturday of the month, and unless noted (such as October) there will be some type of program in the Church Hall on that Saturday after Mass.

The PYG is an independent organization from the Religious Education Department. They are targeting the ages of pre-confirmation through post confirmation. It is important to keep the youth busy and involved in the Church. Grace discussed Diocese requires two adults to be present at all times when working with the youth. She asked for continued prayers for the success of their program. Anyone who would like to volunteer in an assistant capacity should contact Grace.

Grace also gave special thanks to the groups of the parish and individuals who have supported the PYG.

Financial Report – Father Tom thanked Larry Edwards for the time and dedication he has given the Parish as the Financial Secretary and then thanked Tom Pannunzio for agreeing to take on this position. We all wish to thank Larry and Tom for their dedication to our Parish.

Tom Pannunzio then went over Larry’s last Financial Report for the end of the Fiscal Year 2008-2009. Tom then reported that in July we collected $6,538.07 from the offertory collection and $1,173.00 from the emergency repair collection. Our expenses for July were $5,705.55 giving us a net profit for July in the amount of $2,005.52.

Tom stated that the Diocese is probably going to make us start showing the Emergency Fund Collection as income and if that happens we will have to pay the tax on that income also. We will cross that bridge when we get to it.

Tom reported that we have been approved to borrow $105,000 from our building fund to pay for the improvements around the Church. We are borrowing this money from our building fund instead of from the Diocese. If we borrow from the Diocese we have to pay 7.5%. If we borrow from ourselves, we pay 4% and that interest comes back to us.

A budget for 2009-2010 was supposed to be turned into the Diocese by July 1, 2009. As we have never made a budget before, we did not meet this deadline, but we have the start of one and once this has been worked out, a copy of the budget will be provided to the Parishioners.

Social Committee Report – Karen Sobiecki reported a balance of $1,690.82 in the Social Committee Fund. He also mentioned that the Seder Meal will be held again this year and has hopes of being able to afford lamb this year.

Bulletin Announcements – The deadline for announcements is the Sunday prior to the weekend you want your announcement published.

Church Projects – Jerry Burroughs reported that we are getting closer to starting the renovations that have been discussed in the past. We should have three bids on the new bathrooms and hall ceiling and hope to get that started within the month. Jerry stated that many ideas have been discussed and the new bathrooms, the hall ceiling and the work to be done on the classrooms will take priority. Tom will be baptizing two or our Students: Carlie Miller, age 3 and Brandon Jones (4th Grade)
Saturday October 31st: there is a First Penance Service for three of our students: Brandon Jones, Leila Jones and Brittney Kennedy.
These students will be making their First Communion on December 20th, 2009.

Sacraments are very important to us and because we work so hard to make sure that all of our students have an opportunity to make their sacraments; we are getting new families to join our parish. Those making the above sacraments are new families and excited about our program. Carlie Miller and Leila Jones are sisters and the grandchildren of Bruce and Sharon Thompson.

With the help of Fr. Tom; we have two parishioners (both new) taking part in the RCIA program at Sacred Heart Cathedral. One is Ismne (Izzy) Morency and Henry Miller who is the father of Carlie Miller and Leila Jones. Families

Calendar:
We have canceled two of our classes due to the construction in the hall. The dates of these are November 1st and November 8th. Those Sundays the First Communion Class will meet with me in the Church during class time. Other Sundays we meet during the first half of mass so that we can have them ready for the Sacrament but also so that they can be part of Religious Education Program and all the activities that we have. The rest of the time we will be using the church for practice for St. Jude Service and for Christmas Eve Service; hopefully we will also be able to use the hall; especially Dec. 6th which is our Christmas Party.

St. Jude Feast Day:
That day is a Youth Mass – Youth Mass means the students from Religious Education.
I have prepared a schedule of events with the help of Fr. Tom
The Students will do the readings
After the Gospel the students are enacting a story about St. Jude; the story will be narrated and the students will only be acting the roles – no lines.
Students and parents will reading the prayers of the faithful which include prayers Bishop Holley, Fr. Tom and Fr. George in honor of “World Priest Day”,
St. Jude Feast Day
Prayer for those in the “Sharing the Vision” program
Among other prayers
Gifts will be brought up by students and parents; additional gifts are the 100 St. Jude medals to be blessed and 100 St. Jude prayer card/bookmarks
At the end of the Mass Karen Sobiecki will make an announcement and then one of our students will say a special prayer for the priests and make a presentation to each of them – something they have done themselves.
After mass; the students will hand out the blessed St. Jude medals and the prayer cards to all there.

On November 15th our students will go to St. Elizabeth to participate in their feast day. We will also do a narrative with parts being enacted by students. After the mass the students will hand out St. Elizabeth of Hungary Prayer Card/ Bookmarks.

Donations: We have received three donations to help us get things for the students
We will be taking orders for beautiful fresh Christmas Wreaths the next two weekends and then the wreaths will be delivered the first week in December. We will also have one bake sale on a Sunday only in November. We hope to manage to pay for our books for the year with this – the books have cost $500.00.

Sue Carol Oathout
Director of Religious Education
Addendum to the Parishioners Meeting Minutes - 08-13-08

Hi All,
I am so sorry that due to my health I was unable to attend the meeting. I can see that you do need input from me though regarding your comment that "I should contact Dottie" and you would not have known that I have done since I was not at the meeting.

My report to you is this:
October 26th is the Feast of St. Jude. Lastyear Fr. George asked me if it would be possible to have our confirmation on that Sunday. I went to the Bishop's office and it was agreed that we could have that Sunday. This past spring we began preparing for Confirmation. Myself and Michael Gaffney are the teachers. I contacted Martha Seep from the Altar Society some time ago regarding a cake with the names of the confimandi on it - (now there are4 students and one adult that will be confirmed). I also have been in touch with Dottie regarding gifts, they were purchased some time ago - I have them. I have had a meeting with Tina, Michael and Fr. George regarding the music for the mass and I have the program typed and ready for some last minute information. We are planning a retreat for the confirmandi on Saturday Oct. 11th which will be conducted by Fr. George, Michael Gaffney and myself. When first planning the retreat, Fr. George and I talked about it, if there is anything going on in the hall we will move the retreat to the church, easy to do.

I thought it worked out well for us that there was already a meal being planned for the Feast of St. Jude and that we were incorporating the confirmation with that.

The entire year has been planned and the calendar set for the Religious Education program and it was approved by Fr. George. We have two plays, one at Christmas Eve Mass and another in the spring. I am attaching a copy of our calendar.

We have been taking registrations since July and we are growing in numbers .We havesome students from last year coming back and some new families joining our church and our Religious Education Program. After Confirmation when our confirmdi join the youthgroup, we will have approximately 14 students in our Religious Education Program.

Thank you for the opportunity to add my report to these minutes.

Sue Carol Oathout, Director of Religious Education

2009-2010 Season

The Parish Youth Group Advisory met and discussed the following:

Notes:

Ø The 2009-2010 membership year is the Parish Youth Group’s third year as an organization.

Ø Thanks to Karen and Mike Sobiecki for hosting the Youth Appreciation Day on Saturday, August 1. They earned points in every station and team awards were given at the end of the event.

o Parishioners took a break from making cards by bidding in the Silent Auction and enjoying delicious items from the Bake Sale.

Ø Christmas Caroling for the Elderly

o Parishioners donated socks and boxes of tissue as gifts for the elderly. That's the last time you will ever see them in church."

Of course they are referring to our youth - our young people, the future of the church.

But rather than commiserate let us rally round our youth. They are ready, willing and eager to learn more about their faith, about Church tradition, about Scripture, and about how they can be part of the community.

We will start our Parish Youth Group with just a few. Then we will grow it through word of mouth and referrals. The important thing is to get started.

Welcome to our Parish Youth Group.

When do we Meet? - Every THIRD SATURDAY at 1:00 pm
How can I earn points and what do I get with my earned points?

By successfully performing any of the activities listed in the POINT ACTIVITIES SHEET

Your points earned will accumulate and at the end of the year you can redeem them for gift items

Examples of point activities: Becoming very proficient in using the Bible to find verses in Scripture may earn you a total of 10 points, being able to recite the Holy Rosary may earn you a total of 30 points, qualifying as an Altar Server may earn you a total of 30 points, serving as a lector may earn you a total of 15 points, serving as an usher may earn you a total of 15 points, etc.

<font color="#000000"

On Saturday, October 4th our Confirmation Class participated in a wonderful community project, we went to the Ronald McDonald House. It was a heart touching event for all of us. The week before the students planned the meal that they would take for the families and each student brought one part of that meal, prepared by them or at least with the help of their parents. We all met in front of Ronald McDonald’s house at 11am, Katie Clairain with her sister who is her sponsor and her parents, Austin Quina with his mother, Alan Reyes with his parents, Elizabeth Shald with her grandfather who is her sponsor and her friend, and Charles York and his mother. After the food was delivered , there were fifteen of us ready to what ever was needed and that ranged from sorting tabs from soda cans, stocking the soda machine, cleaning storerooms, cleaning toys, sorting packets for the families, etc. We all stayed busy and enjoyed every minute of our time there. Each student shared in our class the following day how much they enjoyed the time there and all that they learned about the Ronald McDonald House. Katie said she wanted to go back and Charles already is involved there. They were all amazed to find out that those tabs from soda machines which we all take for granted actually when saved allow the Ronald McDonald House to pay their water bill – which is access of $400.00 a month. They are sharing this information with the “Youth Group”

The final touch was upon leaving and the students met a father and his baby who was on oxygen. They were on the front porch where we found out that the baby had only recently been discharged from the hospital but was one of twins; the other twin was still in the hospital. God’s amazing timing and a beautiful lesson of giving for our Confirmation Class and all the adults. What a blessing sharing of ourselves and receiving so much more in God’s grace for doing so.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

REGISTRATIONS On-going

Director of Religious Education: Sue Carol Oathout

The religious education school year will start soon. A Report from the Drive Chairman, James Higginbotham

About the author - James Higginbotham is the chairperson of the Knights Tootsie Roll Drive. The drives have been very successful largely to his efforts with the help of other brother knights and their families. Jim is also the Recorder for Council 7402. Additionally he is the master chef of the Pancake Breakfasts served on selected Sundays after Mass, creating exotic concoctions such as the Greek Yogurt accompaniment to the berry pancakes.

Morning Star is an academic program that provides individualized instruction to elementary and middle school children, with varying special needs. The staff of Morning Star has developed a unique program that is designed to build the children’s basic academic, social behavior, daily living, and Christian faith.

Embracing the challenge of providing, developing, and implementing new and unique programs are Jan Powell, Trish Lee, and Micki Pretto. These wonderful teachers, that this writer refers to as guardian angels, have devoted many years (ranging from 3 to 14 years) to improve the lives of these extraordinary children. The guardian angels do not just face the challenge of developing curricula that are geared for the needs of each child, but also face the problem of funding. In July I visited Jan Powell to present the funds raised during the Tootsie Roll drive (see photo A) and was shocked to discover the expense involved in individualized teaching.
Powell was in the process of preparing for the upcoming school year by ordering a new reading program that cost $800.00 dollars just for three of the students.

The Morning Star program is dependent on the generosity of others to make sure that supplies, educational programs, and special equipment are available for the staff and students. It is very important that we continue to participate in programs such as the Tootsie Roll drive to make sure that funds are there for the continued development of the Morning Star program. If the Morning Star program were not available the children would be forced to attend public schools, which are not properly equipped to give the students the one-on-one time or dedication they need to insure the best chances for their success. Last year one of the Morning Star program’s alumni graduated from Tulane University, which he attended on a full football scholarship. He has made it very clear that he owes his success to the staff and the Morning Star program.

Providing quality care and education requires a great deal of time, money, and dedication. The teachers have plenty of dedication, time is set, but the funds are dependent on the voluntary work we as Knight of Columbus perform. Next year I would like all of us to remember the impact that our time and dedication to fundraising programs has on the development of the students and the staff at Morning Star.

In closing I would like to thank the staff at Morning Star for their dedication and just ask that God continue to give them the strength, courage, and faith to continue leading those that need their love and support. I would also like to share one of the programs created by the staff to develop the students’ understanding of economics. The program allows the students to choose a job (see photos B and C). The job has a set weekly pay and the students open checking accounts and are assigned checks so they may pay their monthly bills.
Programs like this are designed to prepare the students for social interaction as well as to improve motor skills. It is programs like this that show the creativity and dedication used by the staff at Morning Star to develop new ideas that use every day activities to prepare the students for the future.

Photo A: Jan Powell (left), James Higginbotham

Photo B: List of jobs performed by students. Regular Membership Dues are $30.00 per year. Each year the Council is asked to make a contribution of $15.00 for Helping Life and $5.00 for Vocations for each member including Honorary Life and Disabled members.

Last year through our Council’s contributions we were able to help four local Pregnancy Resource Centers. In the past we have received voluntary contributions from roughly 20% of the members.
So far this year the response has been much better. If you have not sent in your dues, please do so asap and also please consider making the voluntary contributions.
Make your check or money order payable to:

K of C 7402 and send to:

Jerry Burroughs

124 Mt. Priests need the help of the congregation and the parish council. The parish council needs input of parishioners, the parishioners need the ownership of organizations such as the Altar Society and the Knights of Columbus.

It takes full commitment from all of these groups as well as the involvement and dedication of the church body to assure a successful church.

There are many examples of teamwork. The recent Parish Festival, with the combined efforts of St. Elizabeth and St. Jude's, shows what teamwork could produce. This event gave a true example of many people and/or organizations working together to insure success. Parishioners provided covered dishes in great abundance. Members also provided music, buggy rides, the Altar Society furnished the Bounce Balloon and the Knights of Columbus provided and cooked the hamburgers and hot dogs. All of this was spearheaded by Deputy Grand Knight Tommy Boatwright of Council 7402.

Everyone that I have talked with had nothing but the highest praise, and expressed hope that we can repeat the event in the fall when the weather is a little cooler.

I, as Grand Knight, would like to personally thank all of the parishioners who provided teamwork. The Parish Festival is a true example of TEAMWORK.

Teamwork has no boundaries and there is a great need for your involvement. Please consider where you may help and be a part of the TEAM.

Fraternally,

Bill Clark
Grand Knight
Council 7402

Saint of the Day

This link will take you to the Saint of the Day

Catholic saints are holy people and human people who lived extraordinary lives. The Albigensians (Cathari, “the pure”) held to two principles—one good, one evil—in the world. All matter is evil—hence they denied the Incarnation and sacraments. On the same principle they abstained from procreation and took a minimum of food and drink. The inner circle led what must he called a heroic life of purity and asceticism not shared by ordinary followers.
Dominic sensed the need for the Church to combat this heresy, and was commissioned to be part of the preaching crusade against it. He saw immediately why the preaching was not succeeding: the ordinary people admired and followed the ascetical heroes of the Albigenses. Understandably, they were not impressed by the Catholic preachers who traveled with horse and retinues, stayed at the best inns and had servants. Dominic therefore, with three Cistercians, began itinerant preaching according to the gospel ideal. He continued this work for 10 years, being successful with the ordinary people but not with the leaders.
His fellow preachers gradually became a community, and in 1215 he founded a religious house at Toulouse, the beginning of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans).
His ideal, and that of his Order, was to link organically a life with God, study and prayer in all forms, with a ministry of salvation to people by the word of God. His ideal: contemplata tradere: “to pass on the fruits of contemplation” or “to speak only of God or with God. “

Comment:
The Dominican ideal, like that of all religious communities, is for the imitation, not merely the admiration, of the rest of the Church. The effective combining of contemplation and activity is the vocation of truck driver Smith as well as theologian Aquinas. Acquired contemplation is the tranquil abiding in the presence of God, and is an integral part of any full human life. It must be the wellspring of all Christian activity.

PICNIC 2008

There is no abstract available for this page revision.

POINT ACTIVITIES SHEET

They are all beaming with joy and enthusiasm.
