MINUTES OF THE PARISH YOUTH GROUP MEETING OFJULY 24, 2008

Present: Teresa Bonifay,Grace and Tom Buenavista, Jerry and Melba Burroughs, Trey Burroughs, Bobby Gindl, Floyd Pace, Kathy Peacock, Kimberly Peacock,
Joan and Norm Wallace

Jerry Burroughs opened the meeting with a prayer. Grace Buenavista was asked to moderate the meeting and began by asking for input from the group.

Kathy Peacock contacted Jenna Hall and she was very interested in participating and suggested we consider includingall youth regardless of religious affiliation. She also suggested we contact Barrineau Park HistoricalSociety as to the possibility of using their facility for larger functions.

Bobby Gindl, at the request his daughters who were unable to attend the meeting, provided their following suggestions and also recommendations for events:
- the program should involve allyouthand especially target them at an early age.
- Bowling night
- discount movie night
- pizza - movie night @ the church (fellowship and opportunity to learn more about each other)
- volunteer as a group at a soup kitchen
- have a progressive dinner (kids prepare food)
- spaghetti dinner for a fundraiser
- as a group, bake cookies, make cards and take to residents at a nursing home
- make cards to send to sick and/or shut-in's
- bake cookies and take to orphanage
- team sports (i.e. - volleyball, softball, basketballteams)
- game night (board games, cards, etc.)
- camping trip
- Lock in (i.e. church hall of 4H campground)
- beach trip (frisbee, football, volleyball)
- children's choir
- history of the church night

Bobby also stated that he was recently selected as Youth Director forthe Knights of Columbus Council 7402 and would be representing the knights and helping get them involved with this youth program. He also stated that we need to get more younger parishioners in the parish.


The following are additional comments/suggestions/recommendations/questions from the group discussion that followed:
- program open to everyone and not just confined to youth of our parish
- try billboard advertising
- try and bring in younger families
- try and bring back the children's liturgy during Mass
- send information as to our program and events to the schools in our area
- program designed to bring families in
- can we get a local mailing list of catholic families in the area

From the discussion and comments the following action item list was prepared:
- BBQ to kick off the year's events
- target dates for events
- mail out or hand deliver flyers, put out yard signs with schedule of events and other information
- have a sign up for the program
- select a few events for the year that the group can handle
- ask Fr. Tom about the Children'sLiturgy during Mass
- explore the costs associated with billboard advertising
- send representative(s) to Youth Minister Workshop in Ft. Walton Beach

The group then constructed a potential calendar of events for the upcomingAugust thru May time frame:

The group selected the THIRD SATURDAY of the month to hold the majority of the activities.

Deacon Tom closed the meeting with a prayer.

The following is a suggested agenda for the next meeting on Thursday, August 7th, 2008 at 6pm in the St. Jude Parish Hall (sorry for the short notice):
  • Discuss role of adults in the program
  • Finalize calendar for 2008-2009
  • Discuss needs and duties of person responsible for each event
  • Requirements from Diocese for adult volunteers
  • Open discussion

The meeting will be no more than 90 minutes. If you would like to bring a pot luck item please select "reply all" and send your message. This way everyone will be able to see your response.
