The Parish Youth Group Advisory met and discussed the following:

Notes:

Ø The 2009-2010 membership year is the Parish Youth Group’s third year as an organization.

Ø Thanks to Karen and Mike Sobiecki for hosting the Youth Appreciation Day on Saturday, August 1. The youth enjoyed the Dive-in Movie theme. Thanks to Joan & Norm Wallace for the tokens of appreciation awarded to the PYG members.

Ø The team reviewed the 2008-2009 PYG membership year events and identified the best practices and areas for improvement.

Best Practices

1. The youth were provided spiritual formation and leadership opportunities.

2. Youth Mass every 3rd Saturday… back-to-back with the St. Jude Café dinner where the youth hosted the monthly programs

3. Identified 2008-2009 events that will be repeated in 2009-2010:

Ø “Autumn Harvest Costume Party” and the “Thanksgiving packages for the needy”

o Grace Buenavista liked these events because the youth were involved from beginning to end. They raise the funds, promote the event, sell tickets, host the party, purchase the food from the store, pack the items, and deliver them to the needy families.

Ø Family Fun Fest

o This event was held to encourage the parish family to help create Christmas cards for the elderly in a care home. Like a mini-Olympics, the youth and children formed teams and followed a map that guided them through the stations. Stations include a Crafts table to create the greeting cards, bowling alley, shooting range, fishing, needle in a haystack, basketball, a review of Catholic beliefs, Karaoke, and Pick a message from the tree. They earned points in every station and team awards were given at the end of the event.

o Parishioners took a break from making cards by bidding in the Silent Auction and enjoying delicious items from the Bake Sale.

Ø Christmas Caroling for the Elderly

o Parishioners donated socks and boxes of tissue as gifts for the elderly. The youth distributed the card and gifts after a short program that they created themselves.

Areas for Improvement

Ø Instead of meeting every Saturday, plan the youth meetings on the 1st Sunday and 3rd Saturday of the month.

Ø Some youth members were unable to participate because of transportation issues. It was recommended that parents talk among themselves and have a parent-to-parent agreement on transportation arrangements.

Ø Continue to ask support from parishioners.

Ø In 2008-2009, the Knights of Columbus (K of C) sponsored the St. Jude Café dinners served during the monthly PYG events. However, they will no longer be able to do so in 2009-2010 due to budget constraints.

Ø Provide youth training on how to serve in the Mass. The lay volunteer training will be held on August 15th.

Ø The Administrative group is requested to assist with the following:
o Attend the youth minister meetings in the diocese.
o Ensure that the PYG meets the diocese rules for youth programs (Fingerprinting, background checks, Safe Environment, etc.)
o On youth ministers’ required training, find out if there is a video tape that we can borrow from the diocese.

Ø Teresa suggested something fun to do at the PYG meetings. Examples are pizza party or movie. The team was in favor of making the PYG meetings fun.

Ø To continue with the PYG program, we need someone to assist as youth coordinator. There may be times when Grace and/or Tom Buenavista cannot be present. Kim Peacock said she would not mind helping.

Ø Jerry Burroughs suggested to schedule the Family Fun Fest in May.

Ø Kim Peacock and Teresa Bonifay suggested that the PYG and CCD both join together at the Back-to-School Picnic. Teresa Bonifay will coordinate this event. Jerry Burroughs will make arrangements with John Clark who volunteered his property as venue. Target date is September 20th. Father George said that when the CCD starts, he will talk to Sue Carol.

Ø Norm & Joan Wallace offered everyone to come to their house for the Fall Festival. Date and time to follow.

Ø The St. Jude Parish Council Meeting is on Tuesday, August 11 at 6:30 pm. The PYG was encouraged to send a representative to this meeting.
